At the FreedomBox Foundation, we received a number of requests to accept Bitcoin donations. That seemed like an easy call, and if you want to make a truly anonymous donation, now you can.
I wonder if eventually every FreedomBox will come with a Bitcoin wallet? That would be something!
Nice!
Anyway, Bitcoin is not “fully anonymous”. It is even less anonymous than cash because the numbers (even if they might have no meaning to you) are 100% public. But that is nothing against it.
It would be great to have Bitcoin wallet in Freedombox but some serious usability issues should be sorted out first. For example how to have or be able to control one’s Bitcoins on multiple devices (FBox, phone…) but be completely safe when any of those is stolen etc. Putting wallets into Freedomboxes by default would be cool but it would become also number one reason for attacking them.
BTW. it might be more useful to look into Namecoin, DNS based on Bitcoin. It would certainly add value to FreedomBox if it could register its mesh or onion addresses as .bit domains. It is hard to tell whether Namecoin is the best DNS to go with (there does not even have to be only one decentralized DNS after all) but FBox should at least provide Namecoin lookup!
Namecoin lookup is fantastically simple when linked to a .bit domain name, but that relies on DNS to make Namecoin connections, which makes the domain name less trustworthy then. The trouble is that there are many censorable moving parrts: the .bit DNS server could be blacklisted, it could be faked, it could be poisoned, etc.
